Sakai’s Cutting-Edge ‘Manufacturer of Craftsmanship’
waji, based in Sakai City, is a ‘Manufacturer of Craftsmanship’ specializing in leather and fabric products, overseeing the entire process from planning and design to sales. A traditional Japanese-style home, registered as a tangible cultural property (in Hannan-cho, Abeno-ku, Osaka City) has been stylishly renovated to serve as their studio/gallery. Visitors will be greeted by the ‘tap tap’ and ‘clang clang’ of craftsmen at work.

Mr. Yūki Sugano is a multifaceted representative who designs most of the products while also taking care of everything from planning to sales.
“I have a rather unusual background. I studied ethnology in university out of my interest in ethnic culture. As a buyer of imported folk crafts and household goods, I became involved in craftsmanship around the world and rediscovered the advanced techniques of Japanese craftsmen. I then trained at a long-established bag manufacturer and eventually launched my own brand,” he explains.

Balancing Design with Functionality and Comfort
waji’s first product was the scissors case, inspired by a request from Mr. Sugano’s hairdresser who had a specific design in mind for an ideal scissors case.
He elaborates on the development of waji’s first product:
“After two years of trial and error of creating prototypes and gathering feedback, it finally took shape. As this tool was intended for professional use, I tried to balance design with functionality and comfort.”
Currently, he creates not only scissors cases but also various items such as bags, wallets and aprons alongside fellow craftsmen of the same generation. Peek into the studio to feel the harmonious atmosphere of craftsmen at work, which seems to be reflected upon the waji items that have a sense of warmth and comfort.

waji’s signature range comes in two series.
The first one is the ‘glart’ series featuring an antique door design. Accessories are crafted from a mixture of real glass (designed to resemble stained glass) and genuine leather.
“I’m very proud of this piece which took about a year and a half to develop. The stained-glass-like portion is made of real glass, crafted in collaboration with a reputable glass manufacturer to achieve the color tones and strength that complement the leather.”
The other is ‘aoneco’, the rescue cat series inspired by Mr. Sugano’s love for cats. He focused on the concept of ‘high-quality product × transparent charity.’
“We strictly avoided creating cheap-looking items typically associated with charity products, ensuring that the items reflect the pride of the creator and love for cats. Approximately 10% of the product price will be donated to the rescue cat support facility. Customers can select the recipients from a list on the website, offering transparency regarding the use of funds.”

An Apron to Brighten Your Day

Among the many waji items, the ‘Washable Leather Hakama Apron’ is certified in this edition’s Sakai Kitchen Selection. Its hem is in the shape of a ‘hakama’ (kimono worn over the lower body), allowing ease of movement, and the bottom of a pocket can be opened and closed for cleaning. You may wonder if leather items are suitable in the kitchen environment but the washable leather alleviates any concerns. Even imperfections like stains and scratches will enhance the aging process of high-quality leather.
“With the belief that ‘an apron is not only a tool but a significant expression of personal style’, we tested multiple prototypes to improve usability. We carefully selected the suitable leather and fabric based on our understanding of not just the design but materials’ properties. The thickness was adjusted in 0.1mm increments according to the leather used, ensuring the final product is lightweight and easy to use.”

Introducing the World to the Proud Craftsmanship of Sakai and Japan.

“The name of our brand, ‘waji’ embodies our wish to forge our path from the land of ‘wa’ (‘wa’
represents Japan and also means harmony and self, ‘ji’ means land and path) to spread our craftsmanship across Japan and the world. People often say ‘from Sakai to the world’ because the city is passionate about craftsmanship, with many manufacturers seeking global opportunities. I find this very inspiring. From traditional crafts to advanced industrial goods, I look forward to collaborating with diverse genres within Sakai in the near future,” says Mr. Sugano.
waji’s craftsmanship will continue to evolve as they create a dynamic fusion of the masterful techniques and refined styles that Sakai is so proud of.
