Steps in Chusen Dyeing Process
Application of Paste
The freshly bleached fabric is laid on the paste table, and a stencil is placed on top.
This is followed by an even application of a special ‘resist paste’ that can repel the dye. For each application, the fabric is folded in a bellows shape. This process, which greatly influences the subsequent steps, requires a considerable level of skill.

Forming the Barrier・Pouring the Dye
After placing the fabric with paste on the dyeing table, a sort of barrier is formed by squeezing out the resist paste. Dye is poured into this space, and the fabric is dyed by suctioning the dye from beneath the table using a pump.

Washing
The dyed fabric is taken to the washing area, where all the paste and excess dye are washed away.

Hanging to Dry
The washed fabric is dewatered and dried either in the sun or using industrial dryers indoors.
