Steps in Sakai Forged Knife Production

Forging

Soft iron and steel are heated until red-hot, then repeatedly hammered, shaped and bonded to create a strong and resilient blade, forming the knife’s base, known as ‘ji’. Mastering these techniques requires 10 to 15 years, and it is this skilled craftsmanship that enables the forging process.

Sharpening

The ‘ji’ crafted by the blacksmith is refined using various whetstones to create a beautifully sharp blade. This process alone consists of over ten steps and is carefully executed, reflecting the artisan’s experience and expertise.

Handle Attachment

Most of the procedures are carried out by skilled craftsmen. A technique called ‘tanzou’ is used to heat and forge soft iron and steel by hammering and shaping it. By repeatedly hammering the material, its density increases, resulting in a blade with exquisite sharpness, durability and beauty.
